All pearls, whether Cultured
or Natural, are organic, originally composed of living cells by a living
creature. That is the very essence to the warmth and softness of their
glow. Consequently, they cannot be expected to be as hard as other gems
forged over millions of years within the Earth's crust. But if treated thoughtfully,
as all rare and valuable objects should be, there is no reason for this
to affect their longevity. Adherence to the following rules of care will
help to maintain their beauty.
1. Cosmetics and perfumes can be particularly
detrimental to pearls. An excess of perspiration may too, be harmful
over a period of time. Pearls should be worn on skin free of cosmetics,
perfumes, or lotions. They should also be put on after hairspray has
been applied. The chemicals in the above will dull the luster. Your
pearls should therefore be regularly wiped with a soft cloth. Use of
special Pearl Cleansing liquid will be beneficial.
2. The silk string, too, is susceptible
to cosmetics and perspiration. Check for wear. If the pearls move freely
between knots, there is a greater chance of breakage. It is a good idea
to have your pearls restrung if there is any evidence of weakness. Have
the Jeweler check the security of the clasp at the same time.
3. The surface of your pearls will be
damaged by abrasive substances, so keep them by themselves, separate
from other jewels. The best place to keep pearls when not in use is a
jewel box lined with velvet or silk.
